I often hold onto links I intend to blog about, but there are always a few that I don’t get to and are a bit stale.

Most Political Action Committees, or PACs, spend over 60% of the money they raise to party with lobbyists and raise more money.

People don’t mind being unemployed as much if they have unemployed friends (This isn’t surprising–you see it with obesity, too). However, this makes them less likely to look for another job (or attempt to lose weight).

John McIntyre, whom I perpetually confuse with John McEnroe, is back at the Sun: “‘My father,’ she said, looking me up and down, ‘wore a seersucker suit and a boater in the summertime too.’ [Pause.] ‘Of course, he was born in 1898.’”

I just started re-watching Breaking Bad, with hopes of getting caught up before the season ends, so here’s an interview with series creator Vince Gilligan. On main character Walter White: “A guy who would…become a criminal—perhaps has more on his mind than simply making money for his family.”

A theory of why it’s good to be a single man in DC.

I don’t blog much about my sartorial choices and obsessions, mostly because a) I don’t really dress up much anymore, and b) this isn’t that kind of blog. However, this Dress a Day post is more or less what goes through my head when considering an item of clothing (with some gendered substitutions):

Fabric. Is there some in my stash or lurking somewhere on the internet that I simply can’t live without? Have I been obsessing about a particular event for which a stunt dress is necessary? Have I been thinking about a particular theme, like stripes or eyelet or giant florals? Do I have a new cardigan in a weird color (yes, I’m looking at you, Land’s End) that needs a mate?

Visualization. Where will I wear this dress? Who will be there? Will I wear it once, or over and over again? Will I blog it?

Shoes. Which ones? Do I already own them? Would this dress require shoes that do not, in fact, actually exist? (E.g., every pair of boots I’ve ever wanted.) Do I have a pair of shoes in a weird color that I need to make a dress to match? Am I looking for an excuse to buy a new pair of shoes in a weird color? (Lather, rinse, repeat for “Coat” and “Bag”.)

Style blogs like the Sartorialist extol a personal kind of style, but time and thought goes into creating an apparently effortless, unique-snowflake look.

However, as a guy with a fairly set personal style and a tendency to wear things until they fall apart, it’s still weird to read lines like: “The average Zara customer doesn’t expect to wear what she buys more than about ten times.” I’ve read similar things about H&M.

I realize I don’t write many unabashedly uplifting posts, so here is a list of five things that made me happy recently:

My friend J-Wy got into MICA, and will be living with me for a few weeks. Sorry if that ruins the surprise for people she hasn’t told yet.

These messenger bags made from life jackets. If I could wear yellow, I would be all about it. I can’t, so I bequeath this to you.
Update: It is €129. So, never mind.

Darkon. Less than five minutes in, there are night/dark elves. Talking in an elf-language. Wearing blackface. And then it gets legitimately touching, and pretty good. Worth watching.

Finally, proof that guinea pigs can code.

Getting paid. Paychecks are tremendous, but direct deposit rules the schools.

“Project Runway” finalist Kenley Collins was arrested today after assaulting her fiance with their cat, authorities said today.
[...]
According to law enforcement sources, an enraged Collins woke Penley up just after 7 a.m. by hurling their cat in his face. Then she threw her laptop, and as he fell crawled on the floor, slammed a door on his head.

She threw three apples, and doused him with water, before he was able to dial 911.

“You’re lucky, it could have been worse,” Collins told Penley after the blow, according to sources.

It’s been a bit tumultuous in the Penley-Kenley household, too:

Neighbors said the couple had been fighting for weeks.

“Lately there has been a lot of yelling,” neighbor Ken Edge, 31, said. “I can hear Kenley much louder than I can hear Zak. When she speaks, she yells. Since she moved in around September there have been a lot of noise problems.”

I feel for the guy, even if he was dumb enough to start dating someone so obviously batshit. And the cherry on top is that she still refuses to take responsibility for anything she does:

“It was a miscommunication,” Collins told The Post after getting released without bail from Brooklyn Supreme Court yesterday morning.

“Fights happen, And that’s that. There is no case.”

Thanks for brightening my day, Jim (@Class_Act)!

Tangent: What the fuck, NYPost? Did you fire your entire copy editing staff?

After a three-month drought of worthwhile concerts, Cut Copy, the Juan Maclean and Hot Chip are playing DC in a one-week stretch. And I am broke. But here’s five things to make your life better:

Firefox 3. Harder, better, faster, stronger.

Daft Bodies. Watch this while you download #1. I’ve been listening to Homework and Discovery a lot lately.

Better Gmail 2 (Firefox, Opera and IE7 add-on). Macros, nested labels, attachment type displays and more from Lifehacker. Requires Greasemonkey, but (Turns out, there’s an options panel that my instruction-non-reading ass missed) it’ll make sorting email that much easier.

Streetwalker. The rest of this blog is of marginal interest to me, but I can’t say no to a well-done Sartorialist-clone.

“Best Supporting Actor” (direct MP3) This work week has been generally shitty, so some summery indie pop is just about what the doctor ordered. One for the Team sounds a lot like Mates of State with some of the shellac washed off. (HT: Music for Robots)
