    ]]>     Google just released Open Spot, an Android app (public beta, natch) that tells you where there are open parking spots.

    Open Spot works by letting people who are leaving parking spots share their spots with people who are searching for parking.

    Start helping others find parking, and together we’ll all save time, save gas, and reduce pollution. Like to keep score? The more open spots you mark, the more parking ‘karma points’ you’ll get.

    It’s a cool idea, and could be useful if enough people around you use it. Of course, if you know the area well, you probably already know where to park, meaning the app will probably end up mostly helping suburbanites and out-of-towners find city parking. Also, if you really wanted to save gas and reduce pollution, you wouldn’t be driving.

    I’ve stated that I probably won’t buy an iPhone 4, so this is the official, inevitable post where I backtrack and reconsider buying the damn thing. The phone sounds awesome, and battery life is tremendously improved, which was one of my biggest issues.

    Still, all my previous objections hold, it’s unfortunate that iOS4 doesn’t have unobtrusive notifications, and Apple is doing their best to be bigger creepos than Google. From Consumerist:

    Apple and our partners and licensees may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device. This location data is collected anonymously in a form that does not personally identify you and is used by Apple and our partners and licensees to provide and improve location-based products and services. For example, we may share geographic location with application providers when you opt in to their location services.

  • If you’re one of the precious few with a Nexus One, here’s a guide to downloading Android 2.2, AKA “Froyo.” The instructions for the installation aren’t quite right, so here’s a more complete set. Several steps will take longer than you’re expecting, and you’ll be terrified you’ve bricked your phone. Don’t panic.
  • Doubletwist will let you sync videos and iTunes playlists to your non-iPhone. It’ll also convert video files to whatever format works with your phone.
