In a recent post on his blog, Andrew Sullivan quoted a Mormon reader who was opposed to Proposition 8, California’s gay marriage ban.
Personally, as a church-attending Mormon, the unbelievable, over-the-top support from the Church (at all levels) on this is a never-ending source of shame that digs up some of the worst skeletons in our collective closet (e.g., denying African-Americans full rights in the church until 1978, opposition to the ERA, etc.).
I have to admit cluelessness here. What is ERA (I doubt it’s earned run average), and why does the Mormon Church oppose it? Wikipedia has a bunch of potential answers, but the list has plenty of options that the church might hate. Anyone know?
