Jul 08Hats off.
The Yale Alumni Magazine traces the mortarboard’s history, noting recent grads’ preference for an “extraordinary array of unauthorized homemade adornments.” Don’t miss riveting sections like “The Square Revolution,” “Round vs. Square,” and “Square Triumphant.” Snarkiness aside, it’s an interesting read. There’s even an accompanying family hat-tree, and it wouldn’t be the Internet without some argument in the comments. Looks like mortarboards weren’t invented to force grads to stay awake and keep their heads up during commencement addresses.
