Verizon Wireless hates productivity.

I don’t have an iPhone. I also don’t have a Blackberry, a Pre, or a Droid, despite having spent more time researching and comparing them than I did researching colleges in high school. And I was legitimately excited about the Droid, which I thought would be a step towards an open-source cell phone option.

Unfortunately, Droid sales have been sluggish despite the creepy ads blanketing the airwaves. And naturally, Verizon has decided that “unlimited” has some wiggle room:

The new Motorola Droid smartphone will cost users $199.99 with a 2-year contract, with an additional $30 per month for the mandatory ‘unlimited’ data plan that has a monthly cap of 5Gb. Verizon will charge $50 for each additional gigabyte over the 5Gb limit on the unlimited data plan.

For Verizon, this actually passes for benevolence:

From 2004 until April [2007], Verizon Wireless terminated over 13,000 consumers nationwide for “excessive” use of its “unlimited” internet access plans. These customers were subsequently unable to use their Verizon Wireless cell phones and modems to connect to the internet.

Update: This post could be condensed into “AT&T sucks. Verizon sucks. I’m waffling.”
