This is no way to police a city:
[N]urses at Mercy Medical Center have shared concerns with the State’s Attorney’s Office of “strong-arm tactics” and coarse language from police while interviewing a [rape] victim.
…For four years, Baltimore has logged a higher percentage of rape cases that officers call false or baseless than any other U.S. city, according to FBI crime data. Nearly one-third of rape cases investigated by city detectives are deemed “unfounded” — five times the national average. And four out of 10 emergency calls involving allegations of rape are dismissed before being forwarded to a detective for investigation.
Bold added. Obviously, there’s always pressure on police to lower crime, and for a thin-spread department without the ability to actually deter crimes, the easiest solution is to lean on victims or dismiss their claims. It happens all over–an NYPD detective recently came forward to describe the exact same behavior in his department, which had predictably tragic consequences. Still, this is unacceptable, and is yet another reason for increased police accountability and transparency.
