  1. Old and busted: LAPD brutality. New hotness: Oakland police brutality.
  2. The NFL (probably) shipped Vick to Philly. In all fairness, no one really wants to go to Buffalo.
  3. Did Motorola bludgeon Google into their deal?
  4. Groupon: still unprofitable, also resembles a Ponzi scheme.
  5. AT&T’s overcharging you for texts by 10 million percent.
  6. Cell phones might (might) make men sterile.

  1. Definitely a dick move, Facebook.
  2. Reddit co-founder accused of stealing over a million JSTOR articles with plans to distribute them.
  3. Baltimore cop charged with dealing heroin. The officer, Daniel G. Redd, “was fired in 2002 after being found asleep on the job at the reservoir at Druid Hill Park, where he was supposed to be on anti-terrorist duty… Redd sued and was rehired under a court order, and the city had to pay him $75,000 in back pay.” So. That worked out well.
  4. An interesting article about Google+’s potential to become a “social backbone.”
  5. If you rent a car with your Visa card, they provide collision and theft coverage, although it doesn’t cover personal belongings or liability. Good catch by @StevenMBone.

  1. The case against Bruce Ivins, suspected anthrax letter-mailer, was even shakier than it looked. Greenwald has more, which you should read. None of it is confidence-inspiring.
  2. Baltimore mayoral candidate Otis Rolley would reduce penalties for pot, implement Chris Rock-style bullet control policies.
  3. Looks like we’ll have an NFL season (and preseason) after all! So let’s fight about revenue sharing!

  1. Well, that’s not reassuring.
  2. Naked scanners are here to stay.
  3. Thomas Drake gets one year probation. Backstory here.
  4. I like Sergey Brin’s interview theory: “‘I’m going to give you five minutes,’ [Brin] told me. ‘When I come back, I want you to explain to me something complicated that I don’t already know.’ … An hour wasted with an unqualified candidate wasn’t a total loss if Sergey gained insight into something he didn’t already know.”

  1. I’d like to be able to say “Only in Baltimore could a drunk cop taunt and shoot an unarmed man and not be convicted of murder,” but I’m pretty sure that’s true just about everywhere.
  2. Everything is terrifying, grocery store edition: in the US, food kills one person every two hours.
  3. Compare and contrast: 1777 vs. 2011.
  4. FBI agents no longer need a reason to investigate anyone they want, or record it. But don’t worry–there’s no way they’d abuse that power.
