It’s my great honor to present the finalists–oh, screw it. I still have to pack. Here’s the final order for 2008′s Record of the Year.
As the brilliant neon cover indicates, this album takes a lot from the last few decades of house and techno, but it wraps them up in the trappings of pure, uplifting pop. I know I said that Dear Science was the only record on this list you have to have, but you really should have this one too. Actually, you do have to have this one. You’ll thank me.
I love TVOTR, and pretty much everyone I talk to about music knows it. This album is one of the sexiest things I’ve heard this year–passionate, political (ok, that’s not specifically sexy) and powerful as all hell. If there’s only one album you check out from these 25, make it this one. I’m honestly a little surprised this isn’t holding the top spot. Maybe I should call it 1a.
My girlfriend did not like this DFA disco throwback nearly as much as I did. This led to complications. But if you’d like a modern take on those bouncy ’70s guitars and synths (and don’t mind Antony Hegarty’s voice), this is not an album to miss. If you’re like my girlfriend and don’t like anything resembling disco, at least you don’t live with me. If you’re my girlfriend, at least I haven’t played this album that much recently.
