A Nexus One user update.

After several days of typical use, I’m ready to amend/update some of my initial impressions:

  • There are some touchscreen calibration issues. Occasionally, taps on the bottom third of the screen register as taps on the phone’s touch buttons. My issues are easily fixed by a reboot, but some people are having more frequent problems. Although it might be a software bug that could be fixed over the air (OTA), this is disheartening.
  • Relatedly, there is some real confusion over who’s supporting the phone. Google’s selling it, HTC manufactured it, and T-Mobile runs the network, but there aren’t clearly delineated responsibilities for service, and it sounds like a lot of people don’t know who they should contact.
  • Android Market is still awful. It’s actively discouraging to use.
  • The lack of multitouch is a huge, huge stumbling block. There’s no excuse for Google not implementing this feature immediately.
  • Update: It sounds like some N1s aren’t playing nice with T-Mo’s 3G network, either. I’ve had no problems.

This isn’t buyer’s remorse, by any means–it’s still a great piece of machinery, and I really like it. But I’m tempering some of my initial enthusiasm.

On the other hand, it looks like some enthusiastic idiots are pushing Nexus One auctions up past $600 on eBay (it’s available for ~$560 unlocked, after tax, direct from the big G), so if Apple comes out in a few weeks and announces that their upcoming OLED iPhone 4.0 will run on T-Mobile, I’ve got an out there.
